Lead Character Rigger

Duties

Another fun job for my friends at nineteentwenty in Bristol.

The challenge was to deliver convincing lipsync face rigging within an extremely short turnaround.

To do this I implemented a hybrid system comprising:

• A layer of reshaping controls
• Sculpt shapes for a subset of 'key' poses modelled by Oliver Atton-Higgings.
• A second set of controls that dialled in poses for the reshaping controls and associated sculpt shapes.

The sculpt shapes were reversed against the reshaping system. This allowed the animator to perform meaningful reshaping on top of the sculpts as needed.

The rest of the work was far less technical and far more aesthetic, focused on iterative refinements against reference plates to capture every nuance of El-P's trademark snarl in the sculpts and triggering.
